PROGRAMS:

I. In-house Club Carving Programs

  • JANUARY (2024)) There are no in-house carving classes scheduled for January. The facility is closed on January 15, so there will be no meeting on that Monday.

  • FEBRUARY (2023) - On February 6, 13, 20, and 27, Carol Adair will be teaching members how to carve little people. She will supply the materials needed at $2.00 each. Sessions will be from 4:00 until 5:30 pm. (Completed)

  • MARCH (2023) - During the carving sessions in March, Tim Trudgeon will be available to instruct members on how to properly sharpen and hone their knives and gouges. A sharp carving tool is a must for any carver—seasoned or new. So, bring your knives, gouges, and strops to the carving sessions and “hone them up.” See Tim for more details .(Completed)

  • APRIL (2023) - Will Crawford will be teaching participants how to carve an Angel Ornament like the ones shown above during the month of April. Basswood blocks will be furnished at a nominal cost of $1 per unit. Carving instructions will be limited to 20 participants. All 4 carving sessions will be held in Room #2 (adjacent to the normal carving Room #1) from 4:00 to 5:30 PM. Be sure and signup or contact Will if you plan to attend.   • MAY (2023) - Lynne Patrick will be teaching basis pyrography (aka, wood burning) starting May 8th. Lynne is an excellent instructor having won many show ribbons for her work. Wood will be supplied at a nominal cost and burners will be available for use (or, you may bring your own personal burner). Be sure and signup or contact Lynne if you plan to attend.   • JUNE (2023) - Unless you are carving caricatures, getting the right proportions of the body are essential for making your carving realistic. Stewart Hodges will be teaching how to proportion the face and body of your carvings to give a more natural and realistic look. Wood will be supplied at a nominal cost. (Completed)

“Chirp…Chirp…Chirp”

  • JULY (2023) - Tom Mock will be providing instructions on how to carve a wooden cricket that actually “chirps.” Tom will provide roughouts at a nominal charge. Please sign up—classes limited to 12. Sessions are from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm, July 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31. (Completed)

  • AUGUST (2023) - Ruth and Vince McHenry will be teaching “Love Spoon Carving” during the month of August from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Mondays (August 7, 14, 21, and 28). Carving blanks will be furnished at a nominal charge. Class size will be limited, so please sign up today! (Completed)

  • SEPTEMBER (2023) - With Halloween rapidly approaching, what better way to start the event than carving a pumpkin! Stewart Hodges will be teaching participants how to carve a simple pumpkin. Wood will be supplied at a nominal cost. There will be no carving on Monday, September 4, 2023 (Labor Day holiday). Classes will be September 11, 18, and 25 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm in room #2.   • OCTOBER (2023) - It’s beginning to get closer to Christmas and Tim Trudgeon will be teaching his unique method on how to carve a Santa Claus Ornament. Wood for carving will be supplied at a nominal cost. Painting of the Santa, or another carving of yours, will be conducted in the November painting class. (Completed)

  • NOVEMBER (2023) - Carol Adair will be offering a course on how to paint your wooden carvings. Carol is an excellent painter, so this is one you will not want to miss! Materials and supplies needed will be announced at a later date. Tim Trudgeon will also be helping with this class. (Completed)

  • DECEMBER (2023) - This month we will feature a “Pattern Swapping” event. Just bring some of your favorite patterns to the meetings and let others trace them; and, in turn, you can trace theirs. Also this will be a great opportunity to visit our Club Library and look through patterns that are available. II. Carving at Klingspor’s Woodworking Shop

 

Klingspor’s is located in the Pavilions Shopping Center, at 532 Hanes Mall Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC

Carving sessions take place between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.

[NOTE: Normally two Club members are required for each session. If you participate, bring some of your carvings and something to carve. The blue, plastic container has the black tablecloth, wooden sign, brochures, and sheets for interested people to sign up to receive emails]. 

Please photograph the completed signup sheet(s) and send to Jim Carpenter (Jim Carpenter). Contact Bob Holtje to sign up for a session, or use the sign-up sheet available at Monday Club carving sessions.

III. CARVING SHOWS, EXHIBITIONS, SPECIAL CARVING EVENTS:

  • Relief Carving Class ~ Bob Stadtlander (completed)

    Bob Stadtlander will be teaching a three-day seminar for our club members to be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1416 Bolton Street, Winston-Salem, 27103, August 14,15, and 16, 2023, from 9 am to 5 pm. Wood, patterns, and instruction will be provided by at a cost of $110 per student. Please bring your own tools. You’ll need to let Stewart know which relief pattern you select ASAP so that he can pass it along to Bob.
